Look Ok... Feel Crap?

Is it just me?

No! Depression and anxiety are common in Scotland.

  • An estimated 1 in 5 of the population of Scotland will experience depression at some point in their lives.
  • In Scotland, approximately 1 in 10 young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 years are living with depression right now.
  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) predicts that by 2020 depression will be the second biggest cause of illness worldwide.
  • In 2006-7, over two hundred thousand people in Scotland consulted a doctor for depression and research has shown that as many again showed symptoms of depression but did not seek medical help.

But that’s just numbers. And it’s easy to feel alone even when you are surrounded by other people.

In this section you can find other people's stories of coping with depression. And we've also listed some of the celebrities who have been affected by depression.

The stories

  • Neil Calling a helpline
