Online safety

It's very important to us that you feel safe to talk about how you are feeling and problems in your life. Here are some tips on staying safe in the chatroom and online in general.

It's important to stay safe online. Most people are who they say they are, but you can never be 100% certain online and neither can we. We'd recommend you take care online by using a nickname. and don't give out any identifying details in the chat room such as:

  • Where you live - The area and city or town where you live is ok but it's not a good idea to give more than that.
  • Details of where you work or study. It's fine to say where you study or work but we'd recommend you don't give much more detail than that.
  • Explicit details of where you will be socialising and when. Saying you like to go to a particular bar is fine, but not that you'll be there at 7pm on Thursday.
  • Details about your family
  • We don't recommend you give out any contact details but if you want to give your email address, set up an address that doesn't identify you. You can get free email addresses online from sites like Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo!.
  • If anybody harasses or bullies you or makes you feel uncomfortable either in the chatroom or by private message (PM), PM the chat facilitator (who will have @LOFC after their name) or ignore them (instructions under using chat). If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, follow you

Unacceptable behaviour

In order to keep chat safe, there is some behaviour which is unacceptable. Anyone engaging in these behaviours will be kicked from chat.

  • Personal insults of any form, e.g., based on a person’s sex, age, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability
  • Obscene language - we don't mind a little swearing (we can't really with our campaign name!) but excessive obscene language is not acceptable
  • Suggestive, or over-familiar behaviour to another chatter
  • Any bullying or abusive behaviour
